Thanks Craig Duswalt! Thanks for bringing music to business. Thanks for bringing fun back to business.
I just attended Author101 University in NYC. What a fabulous event! To be able to rub elbows with the Who’s Who of Marketing and Publishing was a total gem, a real treat. But who brought down the house? My friend Craig Duswalt!
Craig has a long history in show biz, well Rock-n-Roll, specifically. As a young man In his 20’s, he was working at the Westbury Music Fair in Long Island, NY, back in the 80s. He was working back stage for a small band called Air Supply – you remember those guys right? Well he hit it off with their manager and they 4-timed his salary and he traveled with the band for the next 8 years. This turned into business lesson #1 for Craig…

Always do/be your best.

You never know who is watching. With our fast-paced business environment, and the web and social media a giant exaggeration of not only what you are doing but also of who you are being, you always need to be at your best. Your next big client might be right next to you at the post office or watching how you talk to your kids. What do you do when no one is watching, because someone probably is.
Craig goes on to teach about the encore. At a concert, a band will give it’s best, then say goodnight. Now envision your last concert. Or your favorite concert. The band has gone. Energy is still high. Perhaps some loud cheering, maybe a steady drum beat, or maybe, just maybe – people screaming for more.
How does this relate to business?

It’s all about the encore.

The extra mile. What are you doing with your prospects, your business partners, your potential business partners, and your customers and clients? What is your encore? It’s not so much about what you are doing – it’s about who are you being? Do you have followers on Facebook or raving fans? Are you delivering value or just selling stuff?
After a career with Air Supply, what did Craig do for an Encore? He got picked up by Axel Rose, of course. That’s right! For part two of his rock-n-roll career he traveled as the personal manager to Axel Rose! Do you think he learned a thing or two about standing out from the crowd? About doing it different than everyone else?
What was his biggest lesson from traveling with the bad boys of rock and roll?

The Importance of Branding Yourself

Yup, that’s right! Branding yourself! How is branding yourself important in your business? It’s everything! What’s your brand? Remember, you are not your product and you are not your job and you are not your company. Do you have a reason people should work with you over your competition? Do you have that edge? What problem are you solving for people? The answers to these questions – YOUR answers – will help you not only understand the importance of branding yourself but help you start actually branding yourself!
