This is the third post we have regarding lessons learned from Glenn Morshower at Craig Duswalt’s RockStar Marketing Bootcamp. Be sure to catch the previous lesson, as well as the first, from Glenn Morshower!
One of the first things that Glenn Morshower – renowned actor, comedian, and inspirational and motivational speaker – talked about when he spoke to us at Craig Duswalt’s Rockstar Marketing Bootcamp in September was about changing the way you are in life. We collect luggage along our way through life. Things that happened to us when we were quite young and impressionable has shaped the way we perceive ourselves in the world as adults. Glenn says that many of our behavioral patterns and reactions to stimuli, both internal and external, are governed by the filters that we create as we go from our pre-pubescence through adolescence. Very often we are not proud of our reactions and the things that we do or say in response. It is programmed behavior and there is something that we can do about it.
Glenn Morshower’s Mini-Death
Glenn Morshower referred to our period of sleep each night as a bit of a mini-death. In other words, we are surrendering ourselves completely to our surroundings and awakening anew each morning. He suggested that as we all wake up each morning we should be thankful that we are able to rise and greet another brand new day. Each day is an opportunity for us to act differently; to make different choices in our response to stimuli. Each day is new. Glenn Morshower has a saying for this – one that he had us all repeat after him – “That was old. This is new. Good-bye!”. His point is excellent.
Glenn Morshower boils it down: there are no bad decisions in life!
When you get down to it, the reality is that there are no bad decisions in life; there are only the consequences of each decision. If they are good decisions, we feel great. If they are bad decisions, we beat ourselves up and possibly take it out on others. There is that nagging sense that we can be doing better, but that we have, once again, chosen to have a bad reaction to something. The way that we react is a programmed behavior for the most part. It is entirely possible to reprogram the pathway to the ‘old’ response, suggests Glenn Morshower, and to begin responding in a ‘new’ way. This is what Glenn meant as he explained his saying “That was old. This is new. Good-bye!”.
Every single day is an opportunity for us to reprogram and to look at life in a new way. No-one is ever going to come up to you and say, “Hey, you used to be a real jerk about how you treated me and I wish that you would have stayed that way!”. That just isn’t going to happen. So there is no reason why you can’t just start a new behavior today and leave the old behind. In the scant two hours that we were privileged to hear Glenn Morshower speak he planted some vibrant seeds of wisdom in very fertile soil. Try it yourself and see.
