Holiday season stress. That is what so many people feel starting around the middle of November all of the way through until January. The pressure can get ridiculous, but it is self-imposed most of the time. There are end-of-the-year deadlines that people struggle with at home and at work. Most employees would love to have the last couple of weeks of the year off, just to try to relax and not think about work-related stress, but many just end up with a few days of vacation left to deal with the holiday season stress.

Major Contributors to Holiday Season Stress

So what are the major contributors to creating this holiday season stress? The first and foremost is the pressure of the financial aspect of the season. Whatever your holiday may consist of it usually means exchanging gifts of some kind at this time of the year. Selecting, purchasing, wrapping and exchanging gifts is one of the most stress-producing rituals of the whole season. In our family, we take the approach of names in a hat, where each of us selects one person upon which we can lavish a grand total of twenty-five dollars. This has helped our twenty-plus member family breath much easier as the season progresses, and helps a lot in reducing the holiday season stress syndrome.
Another huge stress producing activity can be the family gatherings. Let’s face it, there aren’t a whole lot of families that I have ever heard about that have a full-time fantastic family dynamic. Our world would be a beautiful place if all families were accepting and offered unconditional mature love to everyone, but it just isn’t so. Too much rich food, too much alcohol, too many deserts; all of these things create a general discomfort that can amplify the family dynamics. Approaching these events with a willingness to forgive and forget for the sake of getting along is a great remedy for the personal soul. By taking this approach you relieve your own stress. It isn’t for the other family members, although it may rub off; but it becomes a personal release. There is no greater sense of comfort and well-being than being in a loving, nurturing, accepting family environment. This helps to dissolve the holiday season stress, instead of the anticipation of the battlefield!

Addressing Holiday Season Stress
