Join an MLM - NOT!?
There is so much written about what is great with being part of a multilevel marketing (MLM) company, and why we should all be in the MLM business, that I have decided to take a different approach. In fact, this is probably much more true to what the non-MLM person is thinking, and what the MLM associate addresses on an regular basis. There are a lot of reasons not to take that first step and here we are going to review the top five reasons not to join an MLM company.
And the #1 Reason NOT to Join an MLM is…
As you can imagine, most people find the idea of the MLM business intimidating. “I can never sell anything to anyone, especially friends and family!” – and there we have it, the #1 reason not to join an MLM company. Is it true that I have never shared an experience that I have had at a great restaurant, or never shared my enjoyment of a great movie or book? Come to think of it, I tell them about these things all of the time! I am always promoting something that I have really enjoyed to my friends and family. So what is the difference? Well, these companies don’t pay me a referral commission. Hey, I guess I would rather not have an additional stream of passive income… (Where is the sarcasm punctuation on the keyboard? 🙂 )
Now that I have realized that all I have to do is tell people about it, not sell people on it, I guess I can do that. However, it is so expensive! Reason #2 – I can’t afford to get involved. I can’t see myself spending an additional couple of hundred dollars a month on food that will make me healthier than I have ever been. (“Food”, of course, is but one of thousands of MLM products.) No, I think I would rather stick with my high saturated fats and sugar with the empty calories. What’s that you say? It is delicious! Well, ok, let me give it a try. Hey, how did I just lose that 10 pounds? Wow! Where did all of this energy come from? Hey, my food budget at the supermarket just dropped and my craving for fast foods has gone away. What? I am making a few hundred more than I am spending? Hmm…
Here’s a good reason not to join an MLM company: Reason #3 – I like paying taxes. What do I mean by that? Well, when you join an MLM company as an active player, whether it be as an associate or consultant or whatever they may call it, you have just created a home-based business. The IRS recognizes this type of business as a legitimate vehicle for tax breaks of all kinds (check with your accountant!), from office in the home to mileage of the car (check with your accountant!). “Yeah, but it takes a lot of work to keep track of these things!”, so I have heard. Well, paying taxes is part of life, so why not just pay more than I need to? Whatever… Did I mention that you should check with your accountant?
Ok, ok. So there is something to it, but I just don’t have enough time to do an MLM business. Ah yes, reason #4 of the top five reasons people don’t join an MLM company. Time is our most valuable asset. It is what we should be charging many thousands of dollars per hour for for focusing our attention on something. So would this business cut into your TV time? Probably. Would building a community of new friends and business partners be fun and exciting? Probably. Would making an extra stream of income be nice to have? Probably. Would it be possible to carve out an hour or two a day to talk to people about it? Probably…
So there are the top four reasons not to join an MLM company…
So there are the top four reasons not to join an MLM company, and I fully understand them, yet they are really my own roadblocks to passive income and extraordinary possibilities. “But, aren’t those things fads?” It’s great that you have brought that up, since most of them are. What is the ‘juice of the month’ nowadays? How many cosmetic companies do we really need? Can I really lose weight by drinking caffeine-spiked coffee with some ancient Chinese thing added to it? If you can think of it, it is out there in the guise of an MLM company. You are right. In fact, no matter what you think, you are right! (Reason #5, by the way…) But by the same token, there comes along a company once in a while that is offering something extraordinary for your future health and wealth. As if great health wasn’t enough already, to have passive income as part of it? There is nothing better that I can think of about which to tell everyone that I know. I have even begun telling people I don’t know about it. Let’s see, how many people do I know versus how many people do I not know, yet? Extraordinary possibilities…
Not everyone is ready for losing the extra 30, 40, 50 (let’s be honest here) pounds of fast food fat, and not everyone is ready to have their product paid for by telling people about the products and referring them to their personal website. But usually these are the people who are thinking these top five reasons they don’t join an MLM company, and believing what their little voice is telling them. “Don’t do it – you might succeed!” Tell that little voice to shut up!
