You have to become the go-to expert and consistently be appearing in their sphere of awareness. Maybe it’s a great thing, or maybe it’s a sad state of affairs, but most people spend a lot of time on Facebook. No matter how you feel about it, you have to build your professional presence within the Social Media sphere and, if you make a Facebook Like page, you’ll find it to be a great place to begin.

A brand is built by a consistent presentation of who you are and what you do, and it is available at every place online that someone might think to look. It is an image that you create through the creative use of the media that you have at hand – the Internet. It begins with your own website. You have to secure a unique domain name that is easy to remember and easy to enter into the address bar of the browser. Your name is a good place to begin, especially if it is fairly uncommon. If you have a common name and can’t secure the domain for it, then try adding on a word that describes what you do. For instance, Seth Lefferts is pretty unique. It was easy for me to secure it. John Smith is not. However, John Smith Author or John Smith Novelist, John Smith Nutrition Coach might be available. The use of your name is recommended, because it is what people remember about you and that is what they are going to think of first, and, in most cases, that is unique and is what they are going to search for first. Have you searched for yourself? It is truly a eye-opening experience.

Once you have secured your domain name, which is now your branding name, it is time to start building your online presence. If you already have a Facebook page, that will be your Personal page. Your business page will be done as a “Like” page, which used to be called a “Fan” page, but it is yet another thing that the minds behind Facebook deemed worthy of changing to confuse us all. Suffice it to say that now, for branding purposes, you will make a Facebook Like page.
Many people make the classic mistake of marketing their business on their personal page, thinking that this is the place to begin, but it is not the place where people come to get pitched on a business. It is more like a casual cocktail party or a grand scale reunion where they are catching up on the whereabouts and activities of their online community; their circle of friends. Facebook has extended our circle to include long lost school and work friends from all times in our past, relatives around the world, old neighbors, and new acquaintances from all walks of life. Your personal page is a great place to connect with people and to drive them to your business page; your Like page. Once you make a Facebook Like page, it is here that you will establish your brand for all to see.
When you start to make a Facebook Like page, the first thing to do is enter into your browser address bar. Once you are there, click the +Create Page button at the upper right. At this point you will have to choose the type of page you want to create. For the home-based business entrepreneur (if that is you) it may turn out to be the Brand page or the Artist page. The question that you need to answer right now as you make a Facebook Like page is who you intend to be in your online presence? Will you be an author, speaker or other public figure? How are you going to market your brand? Once you choose, you are on your way.
While you make a Facebook Like page, it is prudent to make the site private until you have completed at least a minimum of content. What you create for this page, such as your picture and your bio, will also become the content for your press kits, your other online bios, features on your home page and so on. Remember, the keyword here is consistency. Choose wisely, because in most cases you will end up living with these choices for the rest of your business days. Establishing a brand is accomplished through repetition and consistency. This includes the Username of this particular Like page as well. If you are multi-faceted in your abilities, such as an author, photographer and musician, you will probably end up having Like pages for each facet of your professional life. At this time you should choose to notify your Facebook friends. Ask them to visit your page and click the Like button to start building your community. Now you are ready to start attracting new people and getting them excited about your business through creative and ever-changing content. Your time is your most valuable commodity so spend it on moneymaking activities that will help to bring in new clients and customers. Your brand is built by integrity, respect and consistency.
