There are so many different time management techniques available today, how do entrepreneurs know which ones to study? I have posted on this before, yet, with the advent of the telephone, fax machine, cell phone, smart phone, printing press, Facebook, U.S. Postal Service (do people still use “snail” mail as a way of communicating?), email, Twitter and all the so-called time-saving gadgets of today’s entrepreneur-on-the-go, isn’t it ironic that we are all still so busy? But busy will steal your life unless you take control. Using these specific time management techniques will help you to control your schedule rather then have your schedule control you.
Time Management Techniques Help Identify Where It Goes
First of all, you want to know where your time is spent, wasted, and invested. Since we all have only 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, we want to use our time wisely. If you follow these simple time management techniques, you will find you will get more done in less time and have more time for friends, family, travel, adventure, and fun!
Time Management Techniques Also Help Prioritize What Is Important
So first, let’s identify what’s important to you. What are your “big rocks,” as Stephen Covey likes to call them. Your big rocks are those things in your life that are important to you. What are your values? What are your most important activities? There are usually 5-10, and these are in no particular order:
- spending time with those important to you
- excercise
- religion
- adventure
- job
- philanthropy
- sleep
- building your financial freedom
- alone time
These are the predominantly the basics. Add the time commitments that are important to you. Now put the big rocks in first.
Huh?
This is one of my favorite time management techniques. Stephen Covey talks about a teacher filling a bucket full of rocks and asking her students if the bucket is full. They say yes it is, but then she dumps gravel into the bucket. Again, she asks if it is full and they again say yes. She then pours sand into the bucket and asks once again if the bucket is indeed full. They once again say yes. She then pours water in and fills it up.
The lesson is to put the big rocks in first. What are your big rocks? Put them in first. You will always find time to go to the post office, go to the bank, or watch the latest episode of Dancing with the Stars. But if you do the little time wasters first, like check email, watch dog and cat videos on YouTube, and organize your contact list (over and over), you will never have time for the big rocks – calling clients or building your side business so you can take control of your time and financial freedom.
Having Mastered Time Management Techniques
Luckily I have been a student of time management techniques for more then a decade and now I control my calendar, though it used to control me.
Because I have gained time and financial freedom, I take my time and help others do the same. At DrewBerman.com we teach a lifestyle philosophy of lifestyle = great health + multiple streams of income + time freedom. Most people are blessed if they have just two. We teach entrepreneurs like you how to have all three. My company’s mission statement is to “free people from physical and financial pain” and I am eager to spread the word, baby!
As an example, my wife just got offered a part-time job, paying great money, working 4 days a week. She would have to commute from Ridgefield, CT to New York City. With a 60-90 minute commute, we said, “no, thank you.” We have the time and the money to be more picky.
What would you do if you mastered time management techniques, built your business and created more money, and lived a more healthy lifestyle? Seriously? Would you travel more? Buy a bigger house? Would you volunteer more time to your favorite charity? What if you can literally HAVE IT ALL?
Does it all come from time management techniques? I’d like to think it helps a great deal. Does it come with hard work? You betcha it does! Can it be done? Abso-freakin’-lutely!
In one hand you have the red pill, you can forget we ever had this conversation. In the other hand you have the blue pill, and you can come with me further down the rabbit hole. I can show you what it is like to have time and money left over at the end of the month. You and I can go skiing … on a Tuesday!
I leave you with this. It is Wednesday morning. Say 11am-ish. Your bank account is full. Your calendar is empty. What do you want to do today?
Give me a call…. I’ll help you get from where you are to where you want to go.
To your abundant health, massive success, and time freedom!
Drew
