Applying Zappos Culture and Delivering Happiness

Zappos Culture Delivering Happiness by Tony HsiehIn his book, Delivering Happiness – A Path to Profits, Passion and Purpose, Tony Hsieh (pronounced Shay) takes us through his journey from childhood, through his education at Harvard, to his days in the California rave scene, to creating the Zappos culture as CEO of billion dollar enterprise Zappos.
I am officially a fan of the Zappos culture!! I have read about half-way through Delivering Happiness – A Path to Profits, Passion and Purpose and I feel that I am beginning to understand the inner workings of Tony Hsieh. His focus is fun, mission, and others. In the book title, Tony Hsieh used the words “profits”, “passion” and “purpose”. He is famous for creating the Zappos culture, a business environment of friends and family working together for a common goal. Does that sound like an attractive environment to spend your time working in?

How Tony Hsieh’s life lessons led to the Zappos Culture and Delivering Happiness

In the book, Tony Hsieh shows his life’s lessons, from being forced to study music as a kid, to being an entrepreneur at Harvard during the start of the dot com frenzy. He also walks us through the game of poker, as it relates to the game of life.
After spending an entire summer playing poker, he take lessons from the table into life and into business. He sold his first company – LinkExchange – to Microsoft for $250 million, and was asked to stay on for a year, as $40 million of the sale depended on him staying. But he decided to leave and forgo the $40 million, because he got bored. Then he looked to poker.
From the table he learned about evaluating market opportunities. Table selection is the most important decision you can make. It’s ok to switch tables if you discover it’s too hard to win at your table. If there are too many competitors (some irrational or inexperienced) even if you’re the best, it’s a lot harder to win.
Tony Hsieh seems to be following me. From my tour of the Zappos facility in Las Vegas, through the entertaining prose of his book, to the ads I see in the airport, Tony Hsieh has made me a fan – of him and the Zappos culture – and, of course, a Zappos customer.

Business culture is critical to people’s enthusiasm and their desire to work together for a common goal. Zappos has it right, Google has it right, Apple has it right and You have it right.
